Stay Safe While Grilling this Holiday Weekend

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Charcoal grill safety tips to consider:

  1. Grill outside and away from any structures
  2. Make sure your grill is stabl
  3. Keep your grill clean
  4. Check for propane leaks on your gas grill
  5. If the flame goes out, wait to re-light
  6. Take care around the grill
  7. Be careful with charcoal starter fluid
  8. Wear the right clothing
  9. Be ready to put out the fire

Other things to keep in mind:

  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the flames.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • Electric charcoal starters do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container with a lid.
  • Have baking soda on hand to control a grease fire and a fire extinguisher nearby for other fires.
  • If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, keep a bucket of sand next to the grill.
  • Never use water to put out grease fire.

Precautions to Take While Grilling

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Summer is typically filled with cookouts, BBQs, and family get-togethers, and while this is fun it also brings the possibility of fire hazards. In order to stay safe while still having fun, we’ve created a list of precautions to take while grilling.

Precautions to take while grilling with propane:

  • Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.
  • Do not leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.
  • Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible
  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year**
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.
  • Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

**A light soap & water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

Storm Basics: After the Storm

7/1/2021 (Permalink)

After the severe weather subsides, ensure that you don’t drive through any flooded roadways, as hidden currents can be strong and extremely dangerous. Stay away from storm-damaged areas that could put you at risk due to the effects of severe thunderstorms. Listen to your local weather radio or television stations for updated information or instructions, as they will likely provide crucial information such as closed roadways and blocked areas. Offer assistance to those who may require special assistance such as the elderly, children, or those with access or functional needs. Keep a close eye on your animals.  Stay aware and away from downed power lines- if you see any report them immediately. If you have storm damage to your home or property, give us a call at 732-248-9555. Timely mitigation is key to minimize secondary damages caused by severe storms.

Edison Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Edison will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Indicators that you may have Water Damage in your Edison Home

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

  1. Sounds: you may not be able to see the damage, but you can often hear it. This may come in the form of dripping water, creaky floorboards, or even rushing water
  2. Smell: Dampness has a noticeable odor and may also be accompanied by the musky smell of mold.
  3. Pooling Water or Puddles: If something is dripping or leaking, puddles of water may collect. If you notice an unusual puddle, it may be a sign of water damage.
  4. Coldness: Dampness affecting the walls may make your home more difficult to heat.
  5. Mold: Mold is one of the most obvious sign of water damage, as damp environments often lead to the ideal growing environment for mold and can encourage the spread of it.
  6. Discoloration: Discoloration is another sign of water damage. Water marks or stains on interior surfaces may be an indicator of a slow leak.

If you see any of these signs, it is imperative that you act quickly. Water damage can spread quickly, causing content or structural damage. The situation can also worsen over time if the damage is not properly treated. If you need help preparing for or recovering from a disaster, SERVPRO can help. Give us a call at 732-248-9555 to get in contact with our certified and experienced team.

Storm Basics: Before the Storm

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

To begin preparing for a storm, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan. Another precaution you may want to take is removing dead or rotting trees and branches that are liable to fall and damage the property. If you are aware that a storm is in the forecast, you should postpone outdoor activities and secure any outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage. Keep the 30/30 lightning safety rule in mind- go indoors if after seeing lightning you can’t count to 30 before you hear thunder. Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder you hear.  Get inside a home, building, or hard-top automobile (although a home or building is more secure than a car, you are much safer inside a car than outside). Don’t forget to shutter your windows, secure outside doors, and unplug electronic equipment.

Storm Basics: During the Storm

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

Once the storm hits, try to avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords (this includes corded phones). Unplug appliance and other electrical items such as air conditioners or computers. Power surges from lightning are not only dangerous but can cause widespread electrical damage. Do your best to avoid contact with plumbing as plumbing and bathroom fixtures can be conductors for electricity. Stay away from windows and doors and off porches, and don’t lie on concrete floors or lean on concrete walls. Avoid natural lightning rods, open fields, hilltops, the beach, or a boat in the water. Take shelter in a sturdy building but avoid isolated sheds or small structures in open areas. Avoid contact with metal and if you are driving, try to safely exit the road and park until the heavy rain subsides.

Storms are Ahead

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

In the spring and summer seasons, flash flooding and rainstorms are more common. Heavy rainfall can cause sudden flooding and possible power outages within your local Edison area. When events like these occur, they can create a “perfect storm” for basement flooding and other related water damage. SERVPRO of Edison is always prepared and ready to go for any type of sudden disaster.

Tips for Storm Related Weather

Here are just a few helpful tips and strategies that can help you before and after a storm event.

Before the Storm-

High winds and lightening can cause power outages. Prior to the storm you’ll want to stock up on bottled water, non-perishable foods, flashlights and batteries, in the event getting the power back takes a few days.

Make sure your personal contents are off the floor and on pallets or shelves.

After the Storm-

After the storm you’ll want to survey the interior and exterior property for any damages.

Take photos of any damage that occurred from the storm for insurance purposes.

If emergency mitigation is needed, call SERVPRO of Edison to take immediate action.

Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

As the temperatures begin to drop, it is important to prepare your home for the weather to come. One of the most expensive and common causes of property damage is a frozen pipe that bursts. Aside from maintaining the temperature in your living space, it is important to provide sufficient insulation to areas surrounding water pipes. This insulation helps protect your pipes by blocking the flow of cold air. Oftentimes in attics you can find pipes close to the ceiling with insulation placed over them. Verify that this insulation is still intact and undamaged. Insulating tape can be used to wrap exposed pipes in these unheated areas. Also check to make sure there are no holes, cracks or openings near water supply lines which could expose them to freezing air, and seal any openings you may discover.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

11/30/2020 (Permalink)

  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells in order to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through facets, especially if the pipes run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. The shutoff valve may be located in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off.”
  • If you shutoff water flow to your outdoor faucets, open the faucet to ensure that it drains completely and that the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure all gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and other debris can accumulate, leading to the gutters damming, which could then lead to roof problems and/or water damage.
  • Ensure that your furnace is properly maintained to help reduce the risk of puffbacks.
  • Check the property for downed tree limbs or branches, as weather events such as wind, rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could potentially lead to property damage or personal injuries.

Tips for Preparing Your Business for Winter Weather

11/15/2020 (Permalink)

  • Inspect your property, especially the walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas.
  • Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ensure all gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and other debris can accumulate, leading to the gutters damming, which could then lead to roof problems and/or water damage.
  • Check the property for downed tree limbs or branches, as weather events such as wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could potentially lead to property damage or personal injuries.
  • Ask your local SERVPRO franchise about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business.

Tips from FEMA for Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

  • Plan what you and your family will do if your home is not accessible
  • Cover any windows with precut plywood or hurricane shutters to protect them from high wind
  • Consider if you will be able to run the business form an alternate location or even from your home
  • Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep the doors securely closed
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets.

Tips to prepare your business or home for a flood

Before the flood:

  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home or business.
  • Seal walls in underground with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.
  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, electrical panel, and water heater if susceptible to flooding.

During the Flood:

  • Disconnect electrical appliances
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water
  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can cause a fall.

After the Flood:

  • Stay out of any buildings that are surrounded by flood waters
  • Listen to the local news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink
  • Avoid floodwaters. Waters may be contaminated with oil, gasoline, or even raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged
  • Return home only when it has been deemed safe by authorities.

How to Prepare for Floods

The Importance of Regular Carpet Cleaning

7/8/2020 (Permalink)

Carpet cleaning can be a bothersome chore. However, the reward of restoring the freshness and beauty back to our carpets is worth the effort, as without proper cleaning the soiling of carpets occurs quickly, even with regularly vacuuming and spot cleaning. Listed below are just a few of the main reasons why carpet cleaning is so important.

It prolongs the life span of the carpet.

Vacuuming does help but a lot dirt and grime can sink deep within the fibers. They become hard to clean and begin to look old and discolored. Regular carpet cleaning in intervals of 12 to 18 months sustains longer life span and can help maintain the beauty of the carpet.

It removes stains, restoring the carpet back an unblemished state.

Carpet stains often mar the look of a carpet and make our living space less pleasant-looking. These stains appear all the time from the dirt carried inside from the soles of shoes, spilt drinks, pet accidents and more. Deep carpet cleaning can separate the dirt from the carpets, restoring them to an unblemished and pleasant-looking state.

It lessens pollutants.

The carpet is an effective trap of various particles. Dirt, dust, pet dander, and insect allergens are regulars of home carpet. Regular carpet cleaning helps lessen or completely eliminate these pollutants. The use of special sanitizers like carpet shampoo kills the bacteria from these particles.

It eliminates bad odor.

The dust, insects, and various other pollutants on the carpet emit foul odor. These pollutants increase the chances that organisms like bacteria and fungi will thrive on the carpet. The bad odor is itself a sign of an unhealthy environment. Regular carpet cleaning will not only eliminate bad odor but also hinder these harmful organisms from inhabiting the carpet.

Therefore, as well as your own carpet cleaning routines, you may also want to consider engaging qualified professional cleaning services for an expert review of your carpets. Here at SERVPRO of Edison we have the equipment to do a job well done. You can always give us a call for professional advice or to schedule an appointment at (732) 248-9555.

Keeping Your Home’s Smoke Detectors Operational

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms are an extremely important component of fire safety. Fires in homes with smoke alarms are less likely to be fatal, as having an early alert to danger can help everyone escape the home safely and effectively.

In addition to installing your smoke alarms on every floor of the home, in every bedroom and in areas that are highly susceptible to fires, it is important that you perform regular maintenance on them to make sure they remain effective and are replaced when they reach the end of their working life.

Important Components of Smoke Alarm Maintenance

  • Check smoke alarms every 30 days. It is recommended to test your smoke alarms at least once a month to make sure they are operational. Alarms should be equipped with a test button you can press and hold to make sure the alarm sounds.
  • Know when to replace the batteries. Smoke alarms used to be  designed to have the batteries replaced annually, but many alarms are now made with long-life batteries that do not require replacement for the lifetime of the unit. Be sure you know which type you have and set a reminder to replace your batteries when the manufacturer recommends it.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Regardless of the model, smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years at a minimum. Smoke alarms that are older than 10 years old have a 30% rate of failure, so do not let yours age past their effective lifespan. It is important to note that some smoke alarm models are designed for three- and five-year use, so knowing the details of yours when you install it is important.
  • Vacuum your alarm yearly. Dust can collect in the vents of smoke alarms and make them less sensitive to smoke and high heat.

If you have experienced fire damage to your home, we are here to help you. You call us at (732) 248-9555 anytime to get a quick response from our restoration experts.

What Could Cause Fires in Your Business

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Business owners have many responsibilities, one of them being the safety factors to take into consideration regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors. One of those risks that needs extra consideration is planning for and working to prevent fires.

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

According to a report published by the National Fire Protection Association, the leading causes of structure fires in office properties were:

  1. Cooking equipment: 29% of fires
  2. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment: 12% of fires
  3. Heating equipment: 11% of fires
  4. Intentional: 10% of fires
  5. Smoking materials: 9% of fires

Protect Your Business

By focusing on staff education, risk assessment, and prevention, you can take steps to protect your business from a fire risk and help reduce the chance of a fire breaking out.

Initially, you must assess the fire hazard risk. Fire marshals, can offer advice, help identify your business’ risks, and help provide guidance on your fire prevention plan.

You’ll want to make sure you have chosen the right fire protection equipment. This should include an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers on each floor.

Lastly, consider your employees and visitors. By creating a fire prevention and evacuation plan and reviewing it with your staff, you’ll be making sure everyone knows what to do in the case of a fire. Conduct regular fire drills to keep the fire safety protocol fresh and take time to review evacuation plans.

If your business experiences a fire loss, call us at 732-248-9555 and we’ll respond immediately to help get you back to business and make the loss "Like it never even happened."

When a Severe Thunderstorm Hits Edison Township in NJ

3/27/2020 (Permalink)

Spring and summer bring warmer days, but they also bring weather that has the potential to create heavy disturbances like strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning events. Hail can be created in a severe thunderstorm and can be an inch or more in diameter. Hail like this can cause extensive damage to roofs, vehicles, and landscape. Another risk of severe thunderstorm events is the production of high winds. Strong winds can cause major damage by knocking down trees, power lines, and other property structures—and these knocked-down structures can in turn cause even more damage.
SERVPRO of Edison specializes in storm and flood damage restoration. Our crews are highly trained and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition. If you experience weather-related damage to your property, give us a call at (732) 248-9555.

Local Recycling Center Catches on Fire

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Water and Fire Damage at Edison Recycling Center Damages from a fire and water loss in Heller Park Industrial Park located in Edison, NJ.

Recently, a cardboard recycling plant in Edison, NJ had a large fire loss. Our owner was on-site within one hour of the call – at 12:30am. Once the fire department cleared the scene, our crews began extracting the water throughout this massive warehouse. By the end of the day, all the water was extracted and our air movers and dehumidifiers were beginning to dry out the structure. A quick reaction to a fire and smoke loss is critical to ensure the least amount of damage.

Type of Smoke

Paper, cardboard and wood are materials that generate a dry smoke. These types of fires generally have a higher temperature and are fast burning.

Plastics and rubber generate a wet smoke, which is sticky and smears. These types of fires generally have lower temperatures and are slow burning.

Fuel oil smoke and soot can be generated from a furnace puff back.

SERVPRO manufactures all of our cleaning products. Our technicians are expertly trained to know which product to use, depending on the type of fire and smoke each job has.

Conditions In Edison Might Be Right For Mold

1/21/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on sheetrock Mold found on sheet rock behind paneling during water mitigation

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house or business a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Edison to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (732) 248-9555

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Edison for mold remediation services.

Our project manager was on site within 1.5 hours and assessing the damage to each unit. Coincidentally, that same evening there was a toilet overflow that affected 3 units on the other side of the building. Our certified project manager, crew chief and technicians worked over the next few days to remove all wet materials, clean and treat all areas with an anti-microbial solution and set up air movers and dehumidifiers to dry out all 8 condominiums. Commercial Sewage Loss

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

When a local gym had a water backup after hours on the weekend they called their local SERVPRO franchisee SERVPRO of Edison. They knew SERVPRO of Edison always answers their phones and shows up quickly in a disaster situation. SERVPRO of Edison arrived on site and assessed that the sewage line was still blocked and that a plumber specialist was needed. Once the plumber cleared the line, SERVPRO of Edison was able to bring in the proper equipment and quickly extract the water that was over 2 inches deep in some place and had spread to cover the entire gym. Since it was sewage water the walls had to be cut, and the impacted drywall removed. All the impacted area was cleaned and disinfected right down to lowest level – the c-channels that are part of the wall structure. When everything was cleaned the gym was able to reopen “Like it never even happened."

Flash Flooding

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Flash floods are sudden local floods that occur mainly due to heavy amounts of rain in the local area.  During these flash floods, conditions may become perilous as streets quickly fill with water and houses, especially basements start to flood and get damaged. It is important to remember during these occurrences to be cautious and head to higher ground and to stay away from flood waters. Although they are extremely unpredictable, there are a few ways you can prepare your house and family before such an event.

When preparing for potential floods and flash floods, it is smart to have a family disaster plan in place.  This should include knowing your flood risk, home's elevation above the flood plane, and supplies for yourself and your family in the event of a flood or flash flood.  Additionally, you should reach out to your insurance company and inquire about your coverage in case of a flood.

Some steps you can take to protect your house in preparation for potential flood risks are:

  • keep valuables & important papers in a safe or safety deposit box that is unlikely to be damaged during a flood.
  • Seal walls with a water proof compound to prevent water from seeping in through the cracks.
  • ensure all content in the basement is at least 4 inches off the ground or is in water proof containers.
  • you may also want to consult a professional in construction to see if any additional measure can be taken to protect your home

In the unfortunate event that your home or property is damaged by a flash flood, you can call SERVPRO of Edison at 732-248-9555 to get the remediation handled promptly, professionally, and properly.

SERVPRO of Edison Helped Restore This House After a Fire

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Just a small crack in the chimney mortar caused unimaginable damage.

Fire is an unpredictable disaster that can cause long-lasting damage and destroy a home if not remediated properly.Even the smallest of fires can be a life altering experience for owners and occupants of a home. We recently were called in to help a local family remediate and recover from a fire damage in their home. Having put out the fire in their fireplace, the family went to bed, not anticipating that an unknown crack in their chimney would have such a devastating effect on their home. A hot ember became trapped in the crack, causing a fire to start in the chimney. Fortunately, the family smelled the smoke in the night, called in the fire department and everyone was safely evacuated. The fire was limited to the family room, but the smoke spread throughout the house, causing damage to the contents in the kitchen, living room, laundry room, bedroom and garage. Many restoration companies reached out to provide service, but they chose to work with SERVPRO because we were the company that made them feel most comfortable and assured that their home would be returned to its original condition. We quickly began work to remediate their property. We brought in a dry cleaning specialist to remove and clean their content, and also removed the content that was damaged beyond repair. We then cleaned the home to get rid of the smoke damage. This is just one story of how we made a disaster “Like it never even happened!”
