The Do’s and Don'ts of Water Damage

Water Damage from Clean Water

Do:

  • Shut off the source of water if possible
  • Turn off the circuit breakers for wet areas of the building 
  • Remove as much excess water as possible
  • Remove content such as documents, painting, electronics and art and relocate to a dry area

Don’t:

  • Enter standing water where electrical shock hazard may exist
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water
  • Use TV’s or other appliances while standing on wet floors
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or sagging from retained water

Water Damage from Sewage Water

Do:

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and wet items
  • Wash your hands after contact with sewage or wet items

Don’ts: 

  • Spread contamination by walking in water or wet areas
  • Turn on HVAC system if damaged by water ot use household fans to spread contaminates
