Storm Basics: Before the Storm

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

To begin preparing for a storm, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan. Another precaution you may want to take is removing dead or rotting trees and branches that are liable to fall and damage the property. If you are aware that a storm is in the forecast, you should postpone outdoor activities and secure any outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage. Keep the 30/30 lightning safety rule in mind- go indoors if after seeing lightning you can’t count to 30 before you hear thunder. Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder you hear.  Get inside a home, building, or hard-top automobile (although a home or building is more secure than a car, you are much safer inside a car than outside). Don’t forget to shutter your windows, secure outside doors, and unplug electronic equipment.
