Storm Basics: During the Storm

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

Once the storm hits, try to avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords (this includes corded phones). Unplug appliance and other electrical items such as air conditioners or computers. Power surges from lightning are not only dangerous but can cause widespread electrical damage. Do your best to avoid contact with plumbing as plumbing and bathroom fixtures can be conductors for electricity. Stay away from windows and doors and off porches, and don’t lie on concrete floors or lean on concrete walls. Avoid natural lightning rods, open fields, hilltops, the beach, or a boat in the water. Take shelter in a sturdy building but avoid isolated sheds or small structures in open areas. Avoid contact with metal and if you are driving, try to safely exit the road and park until the heavy rain subsides.
